Are tea detoxes the new juice cleanse? If you are an avid Instagram user, you probably have seen the infamous “teatox” system. The system claims to help you lose weight, boost metabolism, cleanse and detoxify your body. Just from drinking tea alone? Not exactly. Drinking tea will not help you lose weight. If anything, tea detoxes will only provide short-term results. There are a couple of reasons why. By increasing your water intake, you are filling your stomach to suppress your desire to eat. This can severely limit protein and carbohydrates, which can result in fatigue. Also, by drinking more water, your body flushes excess salt out of the body. This effect may make you appear less bloated for a short amount of time before you start eating again.

The truth is, there is no scientific evidence to prove that tea detoxes or any cleansing diet can maintain weight loss or detoxify your body. The body already has its own cleaning system. Your intestines, lungs, liver and kidneys are removing and filtering waste as you are reading this sentence. In fact, cleansing can cause dehydration, lower blood sugar, and cause vitamin and mineral deficiencies. There is no special need to go on tea detoxes. Models and celebrities posting their detox photos on Instagram does not mean tea detoxes work!

If you decide to try a detox diet, try making healthier food choices instead. Reach for fruit or vegetable-based snacks instead of chips and choose high fibre foods to keep you full while helping you eat less. Remember, losing weight is never easy! A well-balanced diet and consistent exercise is the ultimate way to stay healthy.
