Hey everyone, welcome to the first post of the “Ingredient of the Month series”. This series will feature a special ingredient/food product each month in order to help you learn more about the various food products we have in our food industry. To start off, let’s talk about one of the most versatile plant-based protein sources, the chickpeas!
So what are Chickpeas?
Chickpeas are legumes that are typically used in Mediterranean and Middle Eastern cuisines.
Health benefits
Chickpeas are excellent sources of protein and fibre, and good sources of iron and magnesium. One cup of boiled chickpeas contain approximately 12 grams of dietary fibre and 14 grams of protein. They also contain good sources of unsaturated fats, which are known to help reduce risk of chronic diseases, such as high blood pressure and heart diseases.
How do you cook it
There are many ways you can incorporate chickpeas into your cooking. One way is to make hummus with them. You can create this by blending chickpeas in a food processor with some garlic, ground cumin, lemon juice, olive oil, and a dash of salt. You can also incorporate chickpeas into salads or soups for the extra protein.
