Spiced Hot Chocolate

What better way to welcome the colder seasons than with a cozy, steaming cup of hot chocolate? This spiced recipe provides a little extra warmth and flavour for the rainy weather. In addition to tasting great, dark chocolate is high in flavanols which may aid in lowering blood pressure and maintaining a healthy cardiovascular system. Turmeric is high in antioxidants, and may also have anti-inflammatory properties. And of course, milk is full of calcium! This recipe is perfect for sharing with family or friends for a comforting get-together on a chilly day. It can also be easily adjusted if you’re ever in the mood for something sweet on an evening spent in quiet solitude. This soothing hot chocolate will bring a smile to your face and warm up those freezing fingers in no time!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 ½ tbsp water
  • 1 tbsp cocoa powder
  • 1 ½ tbsp white sugar
  • 46 squares dark chocolate (around 40-60 g)
  • 4 cups milk of choice
  • ½ tsp cinnamon
  • ¼ tsp nutmeg
  • ½ tsp turmeric

Instructions

  1. Mix water, cocoa powder, and sugar in a medium saucepan. Ensure the mixture is smooth with no clumps.
  2. Place on low heat until mixture begins to bubble slightly.
  3. Take off the heat and add chocolate. Mix until all melted.
  4. Place back on low heat. Add milk in small amounts, mixing thoroughly in between to combine. Once about 1 cup has been added like so, feel free to add the remaining 3 cups all at once.
  5. Stir in cinnamon, nutmeg, and turmeric. Let hot chocolate warm on medium low until it begins to steam.
  6. Skim off the top layer, then pour into cups and serve.
  7. Enjoy!
